Surreal Worlds of Southeast Asia
Friday 10:00 – 11:00, 204 (Messukeskus)
Southeast Asia—a sub-region of the world made up of 11 countries and over 620 million people—is undergoing a renaissance in speculative fiction. More and more authors from the region are spreading their strange stories to the rest of the world, aided by publications such as the long-running Philippine Speculative Fiction anthology series and LONTAR: The Journal of Southeast Asian Speculative Fiction. In this panel moderated by LONTAR’s founding editor, Jason Erik Lundberg, authors from Southeast Asia, Victor Fernando R. Ocampo (Philippines/Singapore), discuss their works in the context of worldwide speculative fiction in English, and the challenges that come with bringing their authentic voices to a global audience.
